Kalam Mohd Abu, a foreign worker was stopped by police for using a scooter as it is illegal for cleaners to use scooters at work for safety reasons. However, the officers soon let the man off when they were told his reason for doing so.
Kalam has been working as a cleaner for HDB apartments for the last ten years and is well acquainted with the many elderly lives that live in those blocks of flat. That day, an elderly lady who was too weak to look after herself asked him for help. She was weak and fail from an operation and had not eaten any food. Kalam recognizing her genuine need, raced to her help, by borrowing a scooter from another neighbor to bring back his own lunch for the elderly lady. That was when he was stopped in his tracks by the police officers. However, that encounter with the police turned out to be a blessing in disguise as the officer posted his kind deed on their social media and his efforts was recognized by the chairman of the Town Council. When his Supervisor was interviewed by Channel News Asia, they were told that this is not the first time Kalam has done such a good deed. Kindness has always been a part of him for the many years that he has been working as a cleaner. It is only now, that this everyday hero is brought to light.
