Bullying, the defintion, ” when an individual or a group of people with more power, repeatedly and intentionally cause hurt or harm to another person or group of people who feel helpless to respond. ” Bullying can continue over time, is often hidden from adults, and will probably continue if no action is taken.
I am sure like myself, some of, if not most, have been bullied before. Whether it is because of the way we look, dress or act, bullies tend to find their way to harm us, either physically, mentally, verbally or even all three. Bullying is not something to be looked down at, something to be deemed as a small matter, irrevelant and more. It is detrimental to one’s health, their well-being and their overall performance on life as a whole.
I got verbally bullied when I was 13 years old. I had a group of friends which decided to meet one day for project work. Little did I know, before I arrived to meet them, they were discussing not so pleasant stuff about me, which I could sense later on when I arrived and most of them giving me the cold shoulder. However, I just brush the thought aside that they were acting strange towards me and carried on with my work. When I got home that day, texting my friends, I started to get strange comments from them.
Things like name-calling not just about my looks, things that made me feel weak and frighten me like ” you are stupid ” etc made it so horrible, I got into a bad state of depression. It made my self esteem lower than what it already was. Fortuanately, I managed to muster up my courage to speak to my teacher about it, let her know what has been going on, and she really helped me throughout this tough period. I managed to gain confidence and strength around 3 months later, and am who I am today, blessed with good friends and family.
I am sharing this story experience to not demoralize and frighten people who might be victims of bullying, but to encourage, speak up, and be confident. Don’t be afraid to voice out what is happening or it could be too late as it progresses. Even if you think no one would be there for you, there will certainly be that someone, do not fear and stop the bullying. No one deserves it, no one deserves to be bullied, think before you act.
