Disaster or destiny?
Was binge watching Dead to Me on Netflix and realized that “home” can be found in the most unlikely of places and circumstances. Jen meets Judy at a grief group after the passing of her husband, and from the beginning I knew they were going to be something special.
On top of letting Judy crash in her home, Jen opens up her entire life, including her two children to Judy. To be this vulnerable you would only expect on probably the 40th date, but their relationship really sped through the formalities and cliches. Even the less than mature elder son raised his concerns at the dinner table, but of course neglected in favor of the exciting plot ahead.
Clearly, their friendship does not sprout in the healthiest of ways but somehow, they manage to give me something to be jealous about. For instance, having someone give you honest and in-your-face criticism about your unhealthy relationship habits with toxic men. To have someone be so relatable with regards to shitty partners and failed relationships. And most of all, someone to help you bury a body. Preparing breakfast and packed lunch for the others’ children. Of course, I hopefully will never need to do the last on the list, but you get why I’m envious.
You know how normally people will “ship” romantic couples in TV shows, but this one made me “ship” them in a platonic way. A way that transcends any romantic relationship anyone could ever have. Because in the words of Phoebe Buffay “boyfriends and girlfriends come and ho, but this is for life”, ‘this’ referring to the friendship she shared with Joey Tribianni.
I guess what I am trying to say is, a good friendship is hard to come by, and I am so glad I have found such a pal in you
