Simu Liu, Shang Chi and the Ten rings, has been a hero in making for most of his life. The countless set-backs and humiliating experiences served to forge both resilience and resolution. Even when offered the role of MCU superhero role, Simu had to smile off endless name-calling.
“I’ve never been called ugly so many times in entire life”
“I got a ton of trolls… they’ll leave Chinese comments on my page and I’d be so excited to translate them, because I thought, Ooh they must be voicing their support. And it would be like ‘Your face looks like a dog’s anus, you don’t deserve this role”.
Simu has the awesome power of laughing off all the goof’s that he’s made including what other people say about him.
As for his critics, Simu has the last laugh. According to Forbes (business magazine), Shang Chi has become Disney’s most valuable MCU superhero, earning $430 million, or almost three times its $150 million budget, in theatrical alone .
“A lot of teachers thought I’d never amount to anything, a lot of producers, directors, writers and co-stars have questioned my acting ability and I’ve been rejected countless conservatories, grants programs, etc. I’ve been second-guessed at every single possible step of my career”.
Simu was let go at Deloitte (Accounting firm), he says:
“A lady from HR and a security guard escorted me back onto the floor in front of the entire open concept office. It was so quiet you could hear a pin drop. Nobody moved, offered a whisper of encouragement or even looked in my direction. I fought back tears of humiliation, grabbed my things and never looked back.”
Now, Simu celebrates that day for ending a career he hated.
