Bipolar disorder is a mood disorder where a person’s emotions can plunge into depression and then swing into manic highs. Halsey was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder when she was a teenager.
Recently, she opened up honestly with her therapist in a video and talked about the things that we are often confused about mental disorder and have no one to say it to. Such as:
- What am I allowed to feel?
- What can people do to help those with mental illness.
- Challenges of the stigma, keeping relationships and making peace with the disorder
In the conversation, Dr Kapur validated all young people who are suffering from mental illness, that the feelings are real and that you should not worry about what other people think about you. She said that sometimes you are able to take control of those feelings and sometime you can’t. What is most important is that you learn to deal with it.
She stressed the importance of living with the acceptance of the disorder and not blaming yourself for it. Telling people about what you are experiencing will help them to understand you as a whole person and that things can change.
Dr Kapur advised that to live well with a person with bi-polar, we need to accept the person as they are and to allow them to have control over their own lives.
